As a lifelong creative, I have recently been wrestling with the value of art. Why is art important? Can we live without art? What purpose or problem does art solve? Is art a privilege? Can art exist without a story? It may be a reckoning because, at my core, I am an artist, but for the first time in decades, I am not being paid to use these skills. But this was part of the plan. I spent many years designing for others, creating and building their visions. I joined Automattic with the hope I could use my spare time to focus on my artistic vision, find my style, and for once… create for me.
However, spare time is hard to find when you have two small children, so I must accept incremental progress. I try to believe that we underestimate what we can do in a year. I am trying to focus on doing one thing a day for my creative soul. I joined the creators club because I love participating in accountability groups and it was fun to find other likeminded creatives at the company. I look forward to seeing what everyone created and I hope to participate in any future sprints as well.
