Postcards

I signed up to the Creators’ Club knowing I wanted to work on a photography-related project, but not knowing what I wanted to do. What helped me the most was having to ask myself:

What Does your creative life look like in 10 years?
What does it look like in 3 years?
What can you create now?

I see myself in 10 years having several products with pictures I’ve taken. Items like calendars, postcards, photo books, and prints.
I see myself in 3 years having at least two products with pictures I’ve taken. I’ve made a calendar in the past, so I definitely want to make one again, and I’ve been wanting to make postcards for a while.
Given that calendars are only sold at the end of the year, the other product I could create now had to be postcards!

The theme

I’m a huge fan of shooting flowers! I have hundreds of pictures of flowers from different cities, and from different angles and with different camera lenses. So Spring seemed like the right theme for this first set of postcards.

I then researched printing places in Toronto, chose the first picture I wanted to turn into a postcard, and made a quick design for the back of the postcard. This was the result!

Printing a first batch helped me check the type of paper, the size, and any other details. And in this case, the size was a bit too big, the back of the card was missing some text, and the type of paper for the back of the card was too smooth. I want to make sure it is easy to write on it with any type of pen.

Knowing the type of paper, right size, and all the details I wanted, I had to choose how many postcards should be in each package. Chatting about it with Sash helped me decide to make packages of six different postcards. So I went ahead and sent all the designs to the printing place. I should be getting them any day now!

The Packaging

I love getting things on the mail that have thoughtful details, so I went to The Paper Place to get inspired. I came out with some gift wrap paper and thicker paper to turn into small thank you cards.

The final (draft) product

Even though I don’t have the final postcards printed yet, I’ve put together a package of six of the “draft” postcards to see how the whole setup would look like. I used the double-sided flower paper to make a band around the postcards, and wrote a small message on the cards.

I’m really happy with how it’s looking, and can’t wait to do this with the final postcards!
