This project was a wonderful motivator to do two things I love but rarely make time for: creating art and studying language. To inspire time for both, I used the creator project as a catalyst for regular German practice in preparation for an upcoming meetup. I use Pimsleur as my language study tool, which I like because it’s mostly audio/verbal practice. I would play my lesson and, while listening/speaking, doodle both shapes and words loosely related to what I was practicing.
The format I used is one I stole borrowed from an artist on Instagram, where I blocked off a set of rectangles with tape, drew a broad, squiggly shape over the entire page, and then doodled in each rectangle during a lesson. At the end, I removed all the tape to end up with a set of cells that are loosely related but also independent. It felt a lot like art journaling or visual note-taking, which I found to be very effective as both inspiration to practice and an aid in retention.
