About The Club

We are a group of creators working at Automattic, inspired by our passions.

Even though creative pursuits bring so much joy and fulfillment, it can be hard to carve out the space to make them a priority. Creators Club was designed to both showcase the amazing creative talent of Automatticians, and also, to provide the impetus for bringing our projects to life. We all had an end goal we were working toward, which can be exactly what’s needed to make time in the hectic pace of life for creative stillness.

All modalities are welcome, as you’ll see by the wide range represented here. We have 12 weeks to complete our individual projects, and during that time, meet bi-weekly to share our processes and troubleshoot any stuck points. The results of our efforts are what you’ll experience in these projects.

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy!

P.S. Automatticians, want to join the next round of Creators Club? Follow the Creators Club P2 for announcements.

  • Ode to WNC

Quilt Collage 1 Quilt Collage 2 Side-by-Side The idea for this project came to me during the post-Hurricane Helene power outage. At a recent art fair, I was blown away by the craftsmanship and beauty of handmade quilts. It also occurred to me that the giant tiled squares I had seen all around town on old barns and homes were actually quilt squares. I decided in that moment I wanted to create a quilt patterns…

  • Toile de Jouy, Wallpaper Pattern

In 2023, I participated in a class on pattern design and became fascinated with the art form. My mother was an avid quilter, so I grew up surrounded by fabric and textile patterns. As I was trying to learn the craft, one of my goals was to create my own Toile de Jouy pattern depicting the story of our cabin in Wyoming. This pattern will be used on custom wallpaper that will adorn the kitchen.  …

  • Textures of Transition

This digital photography series is about the textures of Fall – the small details that often go unnoticed but make the season so special. While the warm colours of Fall are what we usually think of, I wanted to focus on the shapes and patterns that emerge as the season changes. Working in black and white brought out the quiet beauty of these textures. The way dew clings to a spiderweb, the roughness of bark,…

  • Self-Portrait

Pen & Graphite on Drawing Paper 9 x 12 This is my first attempt at drawing and my first time trying the Zentangle method. I found the process both relaxing and meditative – true to the method’s name. A few of my favorite patterns. Some Zentangle practice at the beginning of this journey:

  • Kaleidoflora

This digital collage is a meditation on the colours in my garden over 2024. I have dreamed, worked and tended the space from a patch of lacklustre grass into a rainbow of pollinator friendly flowers.

  • Turtle Tales: Adventures Beneath the Waves

Acrylic on Canvas 70×100 Project journey During a memorable family vacation, we encountered a magnificent turtle gliding gracefully beneath our sailing yacht. As visitors in the turtle’s ancient realm, it was essential to me to immortalize this fleeting encounter. The artwork is a composite of scenes from both below and above the waterline, capturing the turtle’s world and our brief presence within it. Choosing to paint from this unique, slightly distorted angle was a daring…

  • a8c Creators Club Website

Sasha asked for volunteers to create the Creators Club website, and after giving other folks a chance, I volunteered to help. Most of my experience is with self-hosted WordPress, and I wanted to challenge myself to publish a site built with the full-site editor for the first time. Mission accomplished! Challenges Joys I’m happy with how the site turned out and how I was able to use the full Site Editor. Although putting my custom…

  • Christmas Cards

I know what you’re thinking. It’s too soon. But I love drawing and creating, and my wife loves colouring in. I had this thought that we could collaborate and create some cards that are much more us.

  • charming wall

Meet my creation — a wall-sized charm bracelet. I was inspired by those tacky plastic chains where 80s kids proudly displayed the things they love (in my case: music! space! Froot Loops!). Before this I’d only briefly flirted with clay, so I decided to embrace mediocrity and go big…6 feet to be exact. I also knew there needed to be lots of hearts. I wanted it to feel like something Barbie would hang on her…

  • Postcards

I signed up to the Creators’ Club knowing I wanted to work on a photography-related project, but not knowing what I wanted to do. What helped me the most was having to ask myself: What Does your creative life look like in 10 years? What does it look like in 3 years? What can you create now? I see myself in 10 years having several products with pictures I’ve taken. Items like calendars, postcards, photo books, and…

  • Sprachzeitschrift

This project was a wonderful motivator to do two things I love but rarely make time for: creating art and studying language. To inspire time for both, I used the creator project as a catalyst for regular German practice in preparation for an upcoming meetup. I use Pimsleur as my language study tool, which I like because it’s mostly audio/verbal practice. I would play my lesson and, while listening/speaking, doodle both shapes and words loosely…

A Montessori inspired linear wall calendar for a single year. This is an ongoing project to help my (currently) 4 and 7 year olds better understand the passage of time and past & future events. It was something I had been planning to do for a while, but hesitated to start due to the large scale of the work. I wanted something that was both a permanent fixture in the house that the kids would…

  • Light Saber Hilt

Someone at my maker space suggested a couple of months ago that the wood-turners engage in a lightsaber hilt challenge in which they would turn spindles that looked like hilt designs. That was expanded to include any of the other areas in the space. I work chiefly in blacksmithing and a bit in metalworking and decided to try making a hilt. Initially, I joked that I’d just bring a piece of pipe in, as I…
